Next-generation Honda City to officially debut in Thailand on November 25 – turbo engine confirmed

It has been announced that the next-generation Honda City will make its official debut in Thailand on November 25 this year, and the B-segment sedan will indeed be getting a turbocharged engine, just like the first iteration of the City did way back in the 1980s.

According to Honda, the use of a turbocharged engine will provide 33% better fuel efficiency while offering improved performance, although exact specifications remain a secret until the reveal. However, Headlightmag reports that the three-cylinder powerplant will have 1.0 litre displacement (998 cc), with a 73 mm bore and 78.7 mm stroke, as well as a 10:1 compression ratio.

Other aspects of the DOHC engine include direct injection, a BorgWarner single-scroll turbocharger, dual Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) and Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) on the intake side. The mill is said to deliver 122 PS at 5,500 rpm and a peak torque of 200 Nm from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm, with a CVT paired to it.

The use of downsized engine is deemed necessary if the City is to comply with Thailand’s Phase 2 Eco Car criteria, which is stricter in fuel economy, emissions and safety terms. Among the conditions are Euro 5 compliance, CO2 emissions below 100 g/km, fuel consumption not exceeding 4.3 litres per 100 km (23.25 km/l), and ABS/EBD/BA/VSA as standard across the range.

In addition to the 1.0L turbo three-pot – which has been used in the Civic in Europe and China for a couple of years now, as sampled in 2015 – the City is also set to be available globally with the dual-motor Intelligent Multi-mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid powertrain, which is yet to be revealed.

Unfortunately, the announcement wasn’t accompanied by any teaser photos, so the look of the new City continues to be unknown for now. However, it is expected that the sedan will have a softer and more organic demeanour with some cues inspired by the latest Insight, as suggested by previous renders we posted.

The carmaker promises a sportier exterior design that is coupled to a more luxurious and spacious cabin. Sounds intriguing, but we’ll only know more when the all-new City makes its debut in a couple of days, so stay tuned.
